Are You the Caboose or the Engine?

Are You the Caboose or the Engine?

In life sometimes roles are formulated for us in society early on  …you are a follower or a  Iron Horse starter…the caboose or the engine.  I want to say that Richard Weisser photos about train engines got me to thinking about my role in my real estate career.

See I was rarely the leader growing up.   No, in fact I was the follower until my banking career made me realize that the men were getting all the plum promotions and the women were getting less pay and lack of recognition.  Having a mentor, which I had, who respected my judgment made the difference for me.  It did not happen easily… but my mentor recognized that I had the drive in me that no one nurtured until he gave me the opportunities.  It was always important to me to rise to whatever challenge it was and meet and go beyond it.  I say this because there are many self starters out there in business and I so applaud them for the inner drive they recognize.  But there are many others that just need that little push to make them who they can be in their job and life.
In the real estate business you need to be the engine to survive!  There is no doubt that the caboose needs to find another supplemental job (as many do) to pay the bills.  Or join a team, be a showing agent, etc.
This is the time to mentor newer agents that have the pizzazz, creativity, integrity and can absorb the ‘how to’s’ to do a great job for the real estate clients they represent or will represent.  In my office, a group of us are establishing our own mastermind group without stepping on each others turf to come up with better ideas to make all our business lives easier, use our time wisely, be more prominent in the community and market effectively.  It is becoming inspiring to the newbies.
It is fun being the engine today…are you blowing smoke or really heading successfully down the tracks to a continued career?  Are you the caboose or the engine?
